If you are into herbal teas, you most likely have tried lemon balm tea, or you at least have heard of it. It is well known as a tea that can calm you down. I could talk a lot about Lemon Balm (it’s one of my favorite herbs), and maybe I’ll do that another day, but today I want to tell you about its benefits when used in a lip balm.
Lemon Balm has antimicrobial, antiviral and anti-inflammatory properties. Studies have shown that it is effective in helping to heal cold sores. Lemon Balm’s antiviral actions were shown to inhibit virus activity in this study found at https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/18693101/.
To use Lemon Balm to help heal cold sores, start applying it to the area as soon as symptoms start. You can use it as often as needed but should be used at least 3-4 times a day.
I make Lemon Balm lip balm in small batches. I infuse Lemon Balm into olive or grapeseed oil and use that oil as the base for my lip balm. I also add peppermint essential oil. Peppermint is also an antiviral and has been shown to help heal cold sores, as shown in the following study https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/13678235/ .
